Undergraduate Research (STEM)

The Broad Summer Research Program (BSRP) is an intensive nine-week summer research opportunity designed for undergraduates with a commitment to biomedical research and an interest in genomics. BSRP has a strong record of success in helping students to nurture their passion for research and succeed in graduate school and scientific careers. 

Students will choose their mentor from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and enhance their technical skills and independence in the lab. Students will have the opportunity to attend weekly seminars and work on a presentation project for SURP Fellow's Research Day.

Students will have the opportunity to do research in the biomedical field. The Summer Undergraduage Research Fellowship will be a great way to builf your skills as da young scientist or test your inclinations toward research.

The Leadership Alliance program connects undergraduates interested in a PhD with first-class researchers working in fields in the life and physical sciences, humanities, and social sciences. During this 10-week program,  interns conduct research and participate in discussions with faculty, build their presentation and research discussions skills, and take part in field trips related to their research.

The Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Science offers undergraduates an opportunity for hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories. Fields of studies include developmental biology and genetics, computational biology, and much more.

The University of Virginia offers a 10-week research internship for students interested in biomedical research. The students will be immersed in a hands-on research experience investigating current problems in biomedical research under the guidance of faculty member.

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) offers undergraduate students with interests  in pursuing MD/PhD dual degree training an opportunity to conduct summer research in the lab of a physician-scientist at Vanderbilt. In addition to gaining valuable research experience, students will participate in a variety of formal and informal mentoring activities and will gain clinical shadowing experience.

The Vanderbilt Undergraduate Clinical Research Internship Program (UCRIP) is designed for students who are interested in a career in medicine. Students will complete a research project under the directorship of a research mentor and also directly observe clinical patient care while spending time with residents and attending physicians.

The Translational Neurobiology Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program gives students an opportunity to participate in hypothesis -driven independent research at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. Students will be mentored by faculty members and attend various seminars.

The Building Diversity in Biomedical Scienced (BDBS) program at Tufts Univerisity offers a mentored research experience for students interested in pursuing future PhD or MD/PhD studies.

The CREST program provides support to enhance the research capabilities of ninority-serving institutions and effectively integrare education and research. CREST promotes the development of new knowledge, enhancements of the research productivity of individual faculty, and an expanded presence of students historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The JPL Summer Internship Program offers a 10-week reseach opportunity for undergraduates and graduate students who are pursuing a degree in STEM. Students are partnered with a JPL scientists who will serve as their mentor. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of enrichment activities, including tours, lectures and career advisement, arranged by the JPL Education Office.

Society’s overwhelming reliance on cyberspace has exposed its vulnerabilities. Achieving a truly secure cyberspace requires addressing both challenging scientific and engineering problems involving many components of a system, and vulnerabilities that stem from human behaviors and choices. The goals of the CyberCorps(R): Scholarship for Service (SFS) program are aligned with the U.S. National Cyber Strategy to develop a superior cybersecurity workforce.

The Keck Graduate Institute is offering a Summer Program for Undergraduates for students interested in a career in healthcare or biotech. Researchers wil gain exposure to the biotechnology, medicine, life sciences and pharmaceutical industries along with gain exposure to different research techniques.

Students interns will spend most of their time conducting hands-on research under a research mentor who they are matched with based on the students' interest. At the end of the summer, students present their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium.

The mission of the MLEF program is to strengthen a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals, and this program has mentored several hundred of the best and brightest students from across the nation for future careers in STEM.

ORISE provide students with the opportunity get full hands-on laboratory experience. Opportunities are available as year round.

Students will work on research projects ranging in various biology related subjects. Students will work with faculty and have the opportunity to develop writing, editing, and digital media skills and an ability to convey scientific ideas to general audience.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is a 10-week program that offers hands-on experience in biomedical, translational or clinical research. Students are matched with a mentor from MD Anderson’s research or clinical faculty. Participants work alongside the mentor in a lab or clinic on projects designed by faculty to reflect current research.

The University of Michigan's SMART program is to help students who are interested in a career as a physician-scientist gain research experience. Studens who have a small amount of experience in research and would like to expand their experience are encouraged to apply.

The Graduate College at the Health Sciences Center hosts four summer undergraduate research programs aimed at preparing and encouraging undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research or health related sciences.

The SURF Program in at Cincinnati Children's Medical Center offers undergraduates the chance o explore clinical, translational, and basic science research in labs. Students will participate in writing classes, an ehtics reseach seminar, and introduction to bioinformatics, and a career day.

This program in UC San Francisco allows students to participate in seminars, lectures, and social events. At the end of the program, students give presentations of their research and get feedback from other students, postdocs, and faculty.

The goal of this program is to provide students who are interested in biomedical research with an inensive research and didactic experience in biomedicine. Students will also be partnered up with a faculty member who will serve as their mentor.

Students will work with University of California San Francisco faculty members on research projects. They will participate in the program take part in seminars, lectures, and social events, creating a cohesive and supportive community. Students will also present their research and get feedback from fellow students and faculty.

The Center for Engineering MechanoBiology's research opportunity will match students with faculty members at the Univeristy of Pennsylvania and Washinton University in St. Louis. Students will develop practical research skills such as collaborating, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and communicating results.

The Amgen Scholars Program at Washington University in St. Louis provide students with a 10 week lab experience in the biological and biomedical science field. Program activities include seminars, individual counseling, and a symposium featuring a research poster presentation by each participant.

The Cancer Prevention Research Training Program (CPRTP) Summer Research Experience at the Univerisity of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center provides research experience through a mentoship. Students will learn about current and innovative topics in cancer preventions at seminar.

The Summer Scholars Program at Wake Forest University offers undergraduate students an opportunity to engage in exciting, multidisciplinary research firsthand at the interface of engineering and biology in challenging areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The University of Massachusetts Medical School SURP program offers students a hands-on laboratory research experience under the supervision of a mentor. The program is designed to provide participants in-depth exposure to actual bio medical research. Participants will create career-building connections between researchers, post docs, graduate students, and peers.

LSSURP at the University of Minnesota offers students a research opportunity in various different fields including cancer research, heart, lung, & blood research, and etc. Students are also required to participate in small peer group seminar where they will talk about their project and its progress.

The NSURP program at the University of Texas Medical Branch aims to develop viable treatment to debiliating neaurological diseases and conditions. Students will work with faculty mentors and learn biomedical neuroscience research skills related to cell and molecular biology and more.

The goal of the Mass General Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP) is to inspire students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) to consider careers in academic medicine by immersing them in cutting-edge research opportunities.

One of the goals of the NIH is to build a highly diverse and inclusive scientific workforce. Toward that end, the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education welcomes applications for multiple special SIP subprograms. The subprograms target community college students, college students who would not normally have the opportunity to pursue research projects during the academic year, beginning graduate students in the biomedical sciences, and students enrolled in master's programs in data science and computer science.

The University of Southern California is offering a cutting-edge research opportunity with top USC faculty.Students will woth with faculty in the School of Engineering on projects ranging from machine learning to graph analytics.

The University of Mississippi's School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences offer students a hands-on experience in a biomedical laboratory under the mentorship of a biomedical researchers. Students will also attend seminars and discussions aimed at enhancing their understanding of biomedical research and career opportunities.

The Feinstein Institutes' Summer Student Internship Program is a mentored program designed to provide college students with hands-on experience and familiarize them with career opportunities in disease-oriented research. Interns are matched with research faculty according to their stated interests and work on an ongoing research project in one of the Institutes’ expert programs.

The REEL program is for undergraduate students who are interested in applying their education in life sciences to solving today's agricultural and food supply issues.

The Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) and Research Opportunity Awards (ROA) funding opportunities support research by faculty members at predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUIs).  RUI proposals support PUI faculty in research that engages them in their professional field(s), builds capacity for research at their home institution, and supports the integration of research and undergraduate education.

The goal of the NSF's funding opporunity is to attract research proposals that advance a fundemental, process, and systems-leve; understanding of the Artic's rapidly changing natural environment and social and cultural systems, and possibly improve our capacity to project future change.

The University of Michigan is offering a summer research opportunity for students interested in physiology. SURP students are expected to pursue substantive research projects over the course of the program. They are required to make a full-time commitment to their research. In addition, full and active participation in mandatory weekly meetings, seminars and events is required. Participants are required to give a research presentation of their work at a Summer Symposium, in August.

MSU's Undergraduate Apprenticeship Program allow students to participate in an integrated research and outreach learning experience, while exploring careers in either agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, community resource development, or youth development.

The Research Internship at Minneapolis Heart Institute is a program for undergraduates who want to participate in groundbreaking cardiovascular research. Participants will shadow physician mentors and observe open heart procedure.

The Molecular Visualization Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program gives students an opportunity to particpate in hypothesis -driven independent research at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. Students will be mentored by faculty members and attend various seminars.

Columbia University is offering a summer research opportunity for underrepresented minority students or students of economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Students will be assigned a faculty mentor and participate in weekly seminars and workshops.

NARA Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program focuses on development of a forest residual to bio-jet industry that is regionally focused, economically viable, and socially acceptable.

REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.

The National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science (including engineering and computer science) teachers. The program invites creative and innovative proposals that address the critical need for recruiting and preparing highly effective elementary and secondary science and mathematics teachers in high-need local educational agencies.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (SUROP) at Kansas State University (KSU) gives undergraduates experience with the research process. This experience is designed to help students prepare for graduate school. Participation in a program such as SUROP provides a first-hand look at the process and excitement of discovery through research.

The University of Missouri summer research internship aims to improve diversity in the biomedical sciences workforce. Students will work on their own research projects under a faculty member and present results at a poster forum at the end of the session. Students will also attend various workshops to explore research and careers in the biomedical field.

 Student researchers work closely with researcher mentors in compatible areas of interest. Students take leadership roles in all aspects of the study; they design the study and prepare the proposal, collect data and perform analysis, and finally they interpret the results and prepare a written and oral presentation. 

Rutgers University is offering research experience for undergraduates in algorithms from foundation to application. Students will be matched with a mentor from the Math department and support research projects on intelligent, interactive machines based on data science. In addition, 3-5 students will be selected to spend the final two weeks of the program in Prague.

The University of Pittsburgh offers students classroom training in topics pertinent to the emerging field of computational biology, such as computational structure biology, cell and systems modeling, and more. Students will present their work at the Pittsburgh-wide annual research symposium.

The program's goals are to challenge students in their research field. At the end of the program, students will present their project to judges on Research Day.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is currently accepting applications for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Science, Technology and Policy (STP) Program. Students will collaborate with mentors in order to gain insight on energy efficiency and clean energy.

The University of Buffalo offers a program with research experience in a state-of-the-art biomedical research laboratory. Some of the reesearch topics include biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biomedical informatics, and etc. Students will working as part of a team under a faculty mentor.

The project explores the molecular constitutes associated with milk production efficiency in dairy cows using whole transciptomes sequencing methods.

Students have the opportunity to work directly with faculty on interdisciplinary materials research projects involving chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering disciplines. Students will also participate in an organized program of lectures, laboratory visits and a variety of recreational activities.

The Neuroscience Graduate Department at the University of Michigan is offering undergraduates with a research experience in the areas of behavioral and systems neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, molecular and celluar neuroscience, and etc. Students will present their summer project with a group of faculty and students.

The University of Louisville Cancer Education Program seeks to recruit, educate, and motivate undergraduate students to pursue futher training and future careers in cancer research. Students ill be paired with their faculty memtors from UL or the James Graham Brown Cancer Center.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham offers undergraduates an opportunity to get hands-on educational experience in biomedical sciences. Students will work with science researchers and clinical scientists and learn the major basic and clinical research areas in the biomedical science.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine are looking for students interested in studying medicine. Students s will spend seven weeks strengthening academic skills and enhancing their knowledge in science, scientific writing and public speaking through enrollment in two non-credit courses, MedBio and Med English.

The DHS is seeking Pathways Interns and Recent Graduates for job opportunities in Human Resources, Finance, Readiness, Security and Acquisition. Our workforce is committed to assuring the security, resiliency and reliability of the Nation's information technology and communications infrastructure.

Interns will work closely with KU graduate, masters, and PhD students studying the effects of climate change on natural and human systems and will design independent research projects on climate and environmental change occurring in a Native community of their choice.

The ATE program supports curriculum development and invites research proposals that advance the knowledge base related to technician education. It is expected that projects will be faculty driven and that courses and programs credit bearing, although materials developed may also be used for incumbent worker education.

The CLASSE program invites science and engineering students from around the country to participate in research in their laboratory. In addition to participation in research, the programs will include informal seminars, formal lectures, tours of research facilities, social and recreational events, and a forum at summer's end in which participants will present the results of their research.

Students are matched with a faculty advisor from the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine. The advisor and students will design a specific research project within the context of the research focus of the adviser's laboratory.

Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (MU JCESOM) Graduate Program includes nine weeks of graduate-level research in the field of biomedical sciences. Participants receive formal research training while expanding their learning experience through workshops, seminars on current topics, mentoring and professional networking.

Students will work in basic science laboratories as well as in clinical research at the Dell Medical School and The University of Texas at Austin. The goal of the SURF Program is to introduce the next generation of scientists to laboratory, translational and clinical research, and to spark an interest in a future cancer-related career.

Harvard Forest is Harvard University's world-class ecological research hub, which offer students an opportunity to conduct reseach and build their careers.

The program at the University of Rochester provides trainees with extensive contact with research mentors, their staffs of investigators and supporting personnel who guide the research project and serve as role models and provide career direction. Faculty members are either from the Department of Pediatrics or partners who are engaged in research relevant to childhood diseases and developmental biology.

This program in UC San Diego is designed for motivated undergraduate students from groups that have been shown by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be underrepresented in health sciences on a national basis and who are interested in seeking future training in a combined MD/PhD program or an academically oriented career in medicine. This program will focus on research projects conducted in laboratories of a faculty member in biomedical sciences.

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education.

The Artificial Intelligence Summer Institute (AISI) is collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) scientists on solving problems of national and scientific interest, engage in educational and professional development opportunities, explore career opportunities at national laboratories, and interact with and present their research to ORNL's scientists. Students will be woking in teams to worl on a project that will help develop their scientific skills.

This program is designed to give 25 premed students deeper insight into the field of medicine. Students will learn how one pursues a specific research problem under the supervision of a faculty member. They will also attend many lectures that explore different topiccs related to their field of study.

The purpose of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Summer Research Team (SRT) Program is to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in research areas that support the mission and goals of DHS. They are looking for students interested in STEM in working on various types of research projects with mentors.

The USDOE aims to develop future transformative bio-based products, clean energy, and next generation technologies using microbial systems biology and plants.

The GEMS program will consist of lectures, professional-development workshops, and a mentored laboratory research assignment. Students will be exposed to a realistic lifestlye of biomedical research. The program takes place in the University of Colorado- Denver Anschutz Medical Campus.

The NSDL Program aims to establish a national network of learning environments and resources for STEM education at all levels. The program has four tracks: Pathways, Pathways II, Services, and Targeted Research.

The Marine Physical Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanogrpahy is offering a research opportunity to students interested in scientific reesrach in the marine science and technology field. Students will be able to attend weekly seminars given by faculty members and scientific staff.

JUMP into STEM aims to attract bright students from a variety of majors to building science. The JUMP into STEM initiative seeks to inspire the next generation of building scientists, focusing on creative ideation and diversity in the building science field.

The ASPIRE REU program is designed to promote greater involvement and understanding of Rehabilitation Engineering and assistive technology – while fostering an understanding of the problems faced by individuals with disabilities.  This results in a greater ability to apply engineering principles to improve the quality of life, which promotes a higher degree of inclusiveness and greater functionality for people with disabilities.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) seeks to increase the number of students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 proposals are solicited that provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 proposals are solicited that support educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM.

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison offers a number of Summer Research Opportunities to undergraduate students. These are unique opportunities for undergraduates to work closely with faculty mentors and graduate students in their major discipline. Students accepted into research programs are matched with faculty whose expertise and interests match the student’s research interest.
